Help - Data Protection Scenarios

Data Protection Scenarios

One of the things that makes using the data protection application simple is that two key screens enable you to perform all your data backup and recovery operations. These are the Protect and Restore Screens. The typical scenarios for using the data protection application are as follows:

Select Files to be Protected

You select files you want to protect by selecting a check box next to the file types and locations. See Protecting data for details. If you select a location for protection (For example, Documents), then any files or sub-folders that you add to the folder will automatically be protected.

Restore Files to Your Computer

To restore files, you access your Vault and select folders and files to restore by simply selecting a check box next to them. On the subsequent screens, you can select which revision you want (by the date and time of the revision) and the location where you want to restore them. See Restoring data for more details.

Check the Activity of the Data Protection Application

At any time, you can see the status of your protected files on your computer and on the Vault on the main Home screen. You can also check the progress of operations, such as how much of your selected data remains to be backed up over the network or Internet. If you want to see activity for jobs that have already finished, simply click on Show recent activity.

Disaster Recovery

You will need to recover all of your data if a) your hard disk fails, or b) your computer is lost or stolen. This is commonly referred to as disaster recovery.

The actions you take depend on whether you have experienced a hard disk failure or a lost or stolen computer. Each of these scenarios is summarized below.

Hard Disk Failure

All you need to do to recover your files is:

1) Notify your Provider of the hard disk failure

2) Replace your hard disk

3) Install your operating system and applications

4) Reinstall the data protection application

5) Access your Provider's Vault

6) Restore all of your previously protected files

See Restore Screen for detailed steps.

Lost or Stolen Computer

The recovery process is similar to the steps in Hard Disk Failure above:

1) Notify your Provider of the missing computer

2) Replace your computer

3) Reinstall the data protection application

4) Access your Provider's Vault

5) Restore all of your previously protected files

See Restore Screen for more details.
